AI-Generated Music Is Creating a Scale Problem for Streaming Platforms
Generative AI has dramatically lowered the barrier to creating music, creating a new challenge for streaming services attempting to distinguish meaningful releases from mass-produced uploads.
Evidence of the scale is already emerging. Deezer previously reported receiving nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks per day, representing roughly 44% of its daily uploads at the time.
The issue extends beyond whether AI music should exist. Platforms must now determine how AI-generated content should be identified, recommended, monetized and prevented from manipulating royalty systems.
Why It Matters
Streaming platforms were designed for a world where producing and distributing thousands of recordings required significant time and resources.
Generative AI changes that equation.
If enormous quantities of inexpensive AI-generated tracks enter streaming services, recommendation algorithms and royalty systems could face increasing pressure.
Industry Impact
Streaming services will likely invest more heavily in AI detection, fraud prevention, content identification and metadata systems.
The next major streaming battle may not simply be about attracting more music—it may be about identifying which music deserves distribution, recommendation and monetization.
